Hestraviken

The manager’s villa to the sawmill in Vik was built in 1903 and became a guesthouse in 1931.

Hestraviken in constant development

A history since 1903

Hestraviken has a long and rich history that spans over a century. From being a guesthouse for travelers and those seeking recreation, the facility has grown into a beloved hotel offering nature-based experiences and top-class hospitality.

How it started

1903
Residential house built by the sawmill in Vik

It all began in 1903 as a residential house for the manager of the sawmill in Vik. When the sawmill closed in 1922, the house stood empty for almost a decade.

1931
Viks Pensionat opened by Maria Magnusson

Maria Magnusson bought the residential house and opened Viks Pensionat in 1931. There were seven rooms for overnight stays, and guests arrived by train from Gothenburg to relax in the Småland countryside. Other travelers along Nissastigen also stayed overnight. The guesthouse was also a place for local celebrations, weddings, and funerals.

Maria ran the guesthouse until 1958, when she sold it to the artist couple Svedlund. After three years, the business closed, and the house stood empty.

The Hellström family and Hestraviken’s Inn

1964 – The Hellström family takes over, and Hestraviken’s Inn is born

In 1964, Lennart “Bölja” Hellström purchased the property at Hestraviken. His son, Lars M. Hellström, later also called “Bölja,” took the initiative to revive the guesthouse operations and began an extensive renovation of the building.

Over the next two years, the original building was transformed. The upper floor was furnished with four double rooms and two smaller single rooms, along with two toilets – one with a bathtub – as well as a TV room for the guests. The ground floor featured an elegant dining room with classic furniture and a cozy bar serving lunch.

On December 4th, 1966, Lars officially opened Hestraviken’s Inn and ran the business himself in the first years, while his parents, Lennart and Irma, continued running Irma’s Café and Bakery.

In the early 1970s, Lennart and Irma sold the café, and Irma, Lennart, Lars’ wife Britta, and his sisters Gunilla and Elisabeth joined the Hestraviken operation.

In 1970, Hestraviken expanded with two new buildings that housed seven additional rooms, a conference facility, a sauna, and an outdoor pool, marking the beginning of a new era for the business.

Expansion and growing popularity

1974–1982

During this period, Hestraviken continued to expand. Four larger buildings and six cottages were constructed, increasing the capacity to 33 hotel rooms and three conference rooms. The restaurant was also expanded with two wings – one for a larger, more functional kitchen and one for an expanded dining room, which allowed for a better guest experience and larger events.

In connection with the expansion, the hotel reception was moved from the restaurant to one of the newly built buildings, where conference rooms and a new, larger sauna were also established.

In the 1980s, the restaurant’s upper floor underwent a renovation, where the former hotel rooms were transformed into elegant chambre séparée, perfect for business dinners and private events. At the same time, a lounge area with a comfortable sofa set was created, where guests could socialize after meals in a relaxed atmosphere.

To create a lively and inviting summer experience, Lennart “Bölja” Hellström started a waffle hut in the garden, open during the summer season. Guests could enjoy freshly baked waffles in charming pavilions, while a small dance floor contributed to a cozy and festive atmosphere.

At the same time, the village underwent industrial development, and Hestraviken became a natural meeting place for business. Golf and skiing attracted more guests, and the proximity to major events, such as Formula 1 in Anderstorp and High Chaparral’s wild west adventures, made the hotel an attractive year-round destination.

The restaurant’s major renovation and extension

1992

In 1992, the restaurant underwent a comprehensive renovation and extension towards the lake. With increased capacity and improved facilities, the restaurant became a central part of Hestraviken’s development, attracting more dining guests and weekend visitors.

In connection with the renovation, a conference room was also furnished on the upper floor, further strengthening Hestraviken’s position as an attractive meeting place for both business travelers and private groups.

The manor house takes shape

2000-2003

At the turn of the millennium, Herrgårdsvillan was built, a larger hotel building with suites and a relaxation area. The aim was to create an exclusive environment for weekend and conference guests who sought extra comfort.

Three years later, in 2003, a new reception villa was also built with additional conference rooms, further strengthening Hestraviken’s role as an attractive destination for both leisure and business.

Modernization of the entire facility

2006 and onwards

From 2006 onwards, a comprehensive renovation of all buildings was carried out, where almost everything except the foundations was replaced. Hestraviken became an exclusive hotel for weekend getaways, conferences, golf, skiing, and business meetings – always with a focus on high quality and genuine hospitality.

2023

The largest expansion in Hestraviken’s history took place in 2023 when Riverside Spa was inaugurated by Nissan, along with a brand-new spa villa with nine exclusive hotel rooms. With panoramic views of the water and a harmonious spa environment, this investment marked a new chapter in Hestraviken’s development.
